"All Aboard the Bus" Field Trip Grant Program
The California Missions Foundation, with grants from the William H. Hannon Foundation, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation’s Youth Fund and the Upjohn California Foundation, is pleased to provide funding for Southern California and Monterey County Title 1 elementary schools to take 4th graders to local missions. Each participating class also receives classroom materials. These aid teachers in presenting the history of the missions. They also help students complete assigned mission projects.
Grants for the 2011-12 school year have been awarded and no new applications are being accepted. Applications for the 2012-2013 school year will be accepted beginning April 1, 2012 and must be submitted no later than October 31, 2012. Grants will be awarded in December of 2012. Only one online application per school is accepted for all 4th grade classes at the school. Completed online applications, including a written quote from the bus transportation company, must be submitted no later than October 31, 2012. The California Missions Foundation will award grants in December of 2012. Applications for 2012-13 school year are available beginning April 1, 2012.
Applying for a Grant -- Monterey County
Monterey County schools must submit applications through the County Office of Education.
Applying for a Grant -- Southern California
Title 1 elementary schools in LA County and the Inland Empire are eligible to apply. The grant covers teaching materials and 80% of the estimated total cost of transportation and admission for students, teachers, and chaperones. The school must match a portion of the grant through fund-raising or parent participation.
After receiving a Grant
The California Missions Foundation sends grant checks care of the contact person indicated on the application. Classroom Kits are sent separately. The school is responsible for contacting the mission and transportation company to arrange date and time of the field trip. To ensure funding is in hand, field trips should be planned between February and May. After the field trip, each teacher is asked to submit a simple questionnaire (included in the learning kit and available online). The questionnaires are vital for continuation of the grant program and help improve contents of the Classroom Kits. Schools must return these questionnaires to remain eligible for participation the following year.
