National Register of Historic Places. Mission San Fernando is the site of California's first gold discovery in 1842. San Fernando is the seventeenth mission, founded September 8, 1797 by Fr. Lasuén. The 1806 church building was damaged in the 1812 earthquake and restored four times before the 1971 Sylmar earthquake did considerable damage. The rebuilt church was damaged again in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and is now in good condition, though substantially reconstructed. The original Convento wing stands as the largest two-story adobe building in California. Mission San Fernando is home to archival records from the Los Angeles Archdiocese inluding baptismal records and books from several missions.
