Five years before the American Revolution, Padres Angel Somera and Benito Cambon founded Mission San Gabriel under direction of Fr. Serra. Construction on the site continued for many years, combining skills of the gabrielino Indians and the franciscans. The walls of the mission were stone and hand-fired brick. The church was dedicated in 1805.

The church was topped by a two-story bell tower. The bells were cast in Spain and shipped to the mission. Each bell bears the inscription "Ave Maria". An earthquake in 1812 destroyed the original tower and the present tower was constructed in 1828. Originally, the new tower held five bells, but the franciscans added a sixth bell two years later.

During development of the mission complex, crops were planted and orchards and vineyards cultivated. The mission was a center of activity and self-sufficient. The mission started a trade school for Indian girls to learn sewing, weaving, and baking.

The mission prospered but the "Decree of Secularization" from the Mexican government left the mission with financial difficulties. Secular appointees took control of missions assets and Governor Pico gave the mission to two Americans in payment of a debt.

President Buchanan restored title to the mission in 1858. The mission fell into disrepair as years passed, until Claretian Missionaries took control in 1908. The Claretians are still in charge today.
