San Jose was the fourteenth mission, founded June 11, 1797 by Fr. Lasuén. The convento has the only wattle and daub wall construction fragment left in a California mission. An earthquake destroyed the mission church in 1868. From 1982-1985 the church was reconstructed using traditional building methods. The convento wing is original and houses the museum and collections.
