San Juan Bautista was the fifteenth mission, founded June 24, 1797  by Fr. Lasuén. It sits in a remarkably unchanged setting with considerable collections and achaeological resources. The mission church, built in 1803, has three aisles, making it the largest among the California missions. The convento was constructed in the 1790s and currently holds the mission mueum. The convento and church were damaged by the 1906 earthquake, and repaired through donations from the Hearst Foundation in 1950. Side aisles retrofitted 1975-76 with funds raised by the San Juan Bautista Fiesta Committee.
