California Missions Foundation and National Trust for Historic Preservation Join Forces to Restore Historic Munras Murals At Mission San Miguel Arcangel
Riverside, September 25, 2008
The California Missions Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Western Office have joined forces in an effort to raise $1,800,000 to restore and conserve the historic Munras Murals and stencils at Mission San Miguel Arcangel that were severely damaged in the December 22, 2003 San Simeon Earthquake. The Munras Murals were painted by Native American (Salinan) neophytes circa 1821 on plaster and wood surfaces under the direction and after the plans of Esteban Munras, as artist from Barcelona.
Mission San Miguel Arcangel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971, was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S, Dept. of the Interior in 2006. That same year the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Mission San Miguel one of eleven of "Americas Most Endangered Places".
