Bus comes to Mission San Diego de Alcalal

Mission San Diego de Alcala

Since its founding in 1998, the California Missions Foundation has been raising money to fund mission preservation projects from stabilization of structures to conservation of paintings and artifacts and conducting archaeological research. Every year, through the generosity of our corporate, foundation and individual contributors, the Foundation has been able to increase the number and amount of grants to the missions.

These projects include:

Mission San Juan Bautista

In 2006, the Foundation dedicated tens-of-thousands of dollars to fund the continued rehabilitation of Mission San Juan Bautista, which suffers from structural problems and aging water and electrical systems. With major support from Bay Area Foundations, the Mission is undergoing renovation of its convento wing, upgrading of visitor facilities and beginning conservation of manuscripts and other artifacts. Leaks in the main sanctuary roof - a threat to the mission's numerous artifacts - are being examined and fixed. In the future, additional funds will fund seismic stabilization of the church.

Education

Funding efforts are also being directed toward education programs. Through support from the William Hannon Foundation, fourth-grade schoolchildren from underserved Southern California schools are receiving subsidized bus transportation that enables them to visit missions and see first-hand the rich history of our state.

There are many more projects underway, and just as many still to be launched. Through the generosity of our contributors, we can continue to begin and complete the important but critical work of protecting California's historic structures and their contents.
